At first it might seem hard to understand how chiropractic could help in a global swine flu pandemic, but looking back in history we see how chiropractic has been beneficial in similar historic events.
In 1918 the world experienced the great flu pandemic, which took the lives of somewhere between 20-40 million people. The medical community was at a loss for how effectively treat and contain this pandemic, which led to dismal results from treatments of the day.
In Iowa, medical doctors treated 93,590 patients, with 6,116 deaths, a loss of one patient out of every 15. In the same state, 4,735 patients were treated by chiropractors with a loss of only 6 cases, a loss of one patient out of every 789 according to Walter R Rhoades, chiropractic historian.
This may come as a shock to people who view chiropractic as a technique for only treating neck and back pain. Chiropractic has become a treatment for pain for many, but that was not the original intent of DD Palmer the father of chiropractic.Chiropractic was created to remove interference in the nervous system, which allows the body to function at it’s optimum.
The nervous system controls everything in the body, from the obvious movements of our limbs to the not so obvious function of our immune system. If there is irritation in the nervous system, you might experience pain down your leg or headaches; you might also experience irritation to your immune system that prevents you from being able to fight off a virus.
Chiropractic boosts immune system
Unless your immune system is operating at its fullest potential, it will not be able to protect you from any type of foreign invader. Chiropractic has been shown in clinical trials to improve the function of the immune system significantly. One of the most profound studies to demonstrate chiropractics positive effects on the immune system was performed by Ronald Pero, Ph.D., chief of cancer prevention research at New York’s Preventive Medicine Institute and professor of medicine at New York University. Dr. Pero conducted a three year study that examined the immune systems of patients who had undergone chiropractic care, and found that the chiropractic patients had a 200% greater immune competence than those who had not received chiropractic care.
What can you do to protect yourself?
Unfortunately there is very little that we can do to avoid viruses.Viruses are everywhere, even on the computer screen where you’re reading this information. Most of us still need to go to work and very few of us have a HAZMAT suit at our disposal. Even if we took as many reasonable precautions as we could, we still couldn’t avoid all the viruses that are out there. My intent is not to frighten anyone, my goal is to educate as many people about the best way to keep yourself healthy. Your immune system is your only defense from foreign invaders and if your defenses are down you will become a breeding ground for these opportunistic invaders.
Get checked by your chiropractor, eat well, think well, exercise and you will have a strong immune system that will protect you not only from the swine flu, but everything from the common cold to cancer.
