What are sports injuries?
Sports injuries are as unique as the individual sports themselves. This is why it is important to receive a thorough, individualized examination of your injury to determine the cause and proper treatment for your injury.
Unfortunately many of these injuries, if not treated properly, can limit or end participation in a sport. Luckily many of these injuries can be treated with chiropractic.
How does Chiropractic treat sport injuries?
If you have been hurt in a sports injury, we will take a thorough history and examination to determine if you are a candidate for chiropractic care. If it is determined that your case would not be suited for chiropractic, we will refer you to the appropriate provider.
Pain Relief and Treatment
If you are a candidate for chiropractic care, your treatment will begin with pain relief and inflammation reduction. This might include electrical muscle stim, ultrasound and ice. If you injury is not too acute, joint manipulation may be performed to improve the healing of the bones and joints.
Rehabilitation
The last thing I want as an athlete is to have a re-injury that prevents you from participating in the sport you love. Above all, I believe rehabilitation is the key to re-injury prevention. Most rehabilitation can be done in your home and without expensive machines. Our Athletic Trainer will design an individualized rehab protocol as a part of your treatment. You will be asked to perform these exercises in office to make sure you are doing them correctly. To learn more about our Athletic Trainer, Devin Cox, visit our About Us page.
Education
Understanding your injury is the first step to preventing a re-injury. We know that most injuries happen because we are doing something wrong. This could be improper gait when running (check out 4 Principles of Good Form Running) or this might be poor deadlift form. If we don’t educate our patients on the proper ways to move we know that they will be right back in the office with the same issue. This is why we take the time to figure out the underlying cause of a patients symptom and educate them on ways they can prevent these sports injuries in the future. As a result we find that most patients have a better understanding of their injuries and how to make sure they don’t return.
