What is Functional Rehabilitation?
First, it is important to understand what rehabilitation is. According to the World Health Organization, rehabilitation is defined as “a set of interventions designed to optimize functioning and reduce disability in individuals with health conditions in interaction with their environment.” Functional Rehabilitation is a comprehensive look at how the body functions that focuses on proper movement over symptoms.
How does Functional Rehabilitation differ from traditional rehabilitation?
Traditional rehabilitation is symptoms focused where Functional Rehabilitation is problem focused. For example, if you present to a traditional rehabilitation practitioner with knee pain you will likely receive treatment to the area of pain, eg ultrasound to the knee, stretching or strengthening of the muscles around the knee. With the same compliant Functional Rehabilitation Specialist would check your foot/ankle function along with your hip function. Often times these aforementioned areas and not painful but they are contributing to the pain in the knee. If these Functional issues are not addressed many of these problems tend to re-occur.

We find that many people who are suffering from neck pain, back pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, plantar fasciitis etc… have underlying deficits that perpetuate their symptoms. When we correct these deficits we not only alleviate symptoms but we prevent them from returning.
